Marché Bastille, Paris

#8 of 422 in Shopping in Paris
One of the largest markets in the city, Marché Bastille allows you to meet food producers and sample new flavors as you shop for top-quality food and drinks. You also can find plenty of unexpected items, including sewing machines, beeswax figurines, mousetraps, and more. It takes time to figure out how to navigate the market. Note that this is a rather expensive place to shop for typical grocery fare, but fresh food often comes at lower prices as the day goes on. Remember to ask before you take pictures. Most stallholders welcome you to photograph their produce, but many don't wish to be photographed themselves. Marché Bastille is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Paris Edition.

  • It was very interesting to go to around 10 a.m. on Sunday (i'm a market lover with my husband and wife.) I went there on Thursdays and went there twice in a week. It's more lively than Thursday. There are a variety of shops in three rows for hundreds of meters. There were many fresh shops, and there were rare egg specialty stores in Japan, so I bought figs, cheese to eat in my room, and so on. Credit card usage varies greatly from store to store. On Sunday, I went shopping at three shops and all of them were OK, but the two stores I bought on Thursdays were only cash. Both are fresh food stores.

  • We stayed at a hotel with a kitchen nearby, bought ingredients and cooked them. It is fun just to see a lot of kinds of vegetables in the agricultural country France. There were more than 10 vegetable shops alone.

  • Great place to visit, a tourist must-do. Some french know-how suggested, makes the visit go a bit more smoothly though most if not all vendors speak English.
  • Very Nice and lots of variety there is everything to buy. It Is A flea market where You have from clothes to fish fruits vegetables etc. If you go to the Bastille you have it half a block.
