Fontaine Saint-Michel, Paris

#225 of 2,926 in Things to do in Paris
Located in Place Saint-Michel, Fontaine Saint-Michel is an impressive fountain constructed during 1858 to 1860. You may find this especially interesting considering it is not like most fountains in Paris. This fountain used different colors of stone--columns of red marble from Languedoc, green marble, blue stone from Soignies, yellow stone from Saint-Yllie, and bronze statues.

Fontaine Saint-Michel was also the last monumental wall fountain built in Paris, the end of a traditional Renaissance style which had begun with the Medici Fountain in the 17th century and continued with the Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons in the 18th century. The later monumental fountains in Paris were all free-standing in the centers of squares or parks. To visit Fontaine Saint-Michel and other attractions in Paris, use our Paris trip planner .

  • The source of St. Michel is very showy, however lacks the main one that is running water. When I passed through the place, I didn't. I was just able to appreciate the beauty of its architecture. It is a place where many people are concentrated to take photographs, because it is perhaps the most touristic source of Paris. It was built in 1860, being a project by the French architect Gabriel Davidoud (1824-1881) and is 26 meters high by 15 meters wide.

  • Great place to chill out with restaurants and other cosy places around. The fountain by itself looks really cool and it's very well approachable for photos as well. Not unique but really worthy to have a look at. Can recommend as a secondary place to visit once you finished with the rest.
  • The fountain is beautiful.... But the surrounding area is even better. Streets lined with restaurants from fancy to casual take out. There are a few crepe shops that are inexpensive and taste great. We got a crepe for a meal then a dessert crepe and a soda for 7 Euros. Tasted great and I couldn't eat all of it.
