Memorial de l'Abolition de l'Esclavage is a reminder of Nantes' role in the slave trade during the 18th century. The city of Nantes believes that to take responsibility for this odious episode in history, is necessary for appreciating the thriving diversity it enjoys in the present day. By building the memorial the city recognizes that its wealth was acquired by the inhuman trade in flesh. You will see an austere reminder of these dark days in Nantes' designed by Krysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder who say their design “...will enable visitors to discover and interpret the diverse facets of a history...” To visit Memorial de l'Abolition de l'Esclavage and other attractions in Nantes, use our Nantes visit planning tool.

  • It was kind of a relaxing walk. I didn't realize it would all be outside but it was refreshing
  • A very moving memorial, both unusual in design and very effective. Putting it beneath street level with the concrete pillars shaped liked ship's timbers really creates the impression that one is in the bowels of an old slaving ship. The descriptions and time line are well thought out and detailed enough to give a history of the slaving trade not only that was run from the very river one sees so close by but also the extent and scope of the trade across the world and for so long. Very impressive and highly recommended if you are visiting Nantes.
