Lascaux II, Montignac

3.0
#2 of 39 in Museums in Dordogne
Lascaux II features replicas of the famed Lascaux Cave's 17,000-year-old Paleolithic paintings, which are only 200 m (650 ft) away. Discovered in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, the original cave attracted 1,200 visitors a day. By 1955, carbon dioxide and light had begun to damage the paintings. In 1963, the cave was shut down to preserve the art. The museum opened in 1983. Look for a replica of the cave's Great Hall of Bulls and the Painted Gallery. • Who comes to the Perigord MUST absolutely visit the caves of Lascaux. These caves were also discovered in the last century, in the 1940s. This is not the usual cave with stalattices and stalagmites, but a cave with graffiti dating back to the Paleolithic period. The graffiti is of a unique beauty, indescribable. Executed with the resources of the times that were, but precisely because they were made with natural products, they have come to the present day. The discovery, which dates back to 1940, meant that we could admire them, that is, the cave protected the graffiti from the aggression of the atmosphere. The only downside of this "attraction", is that the guided tour is only in French; the schedules are extremely strict (I recommend to book online and to arrive in advance) ; there is only one visit (and places are limited) in English. Unfortunately the grandeur French demands that everyone speak their language ..... However, the site is well organized, that is, after the visit you can stop at the museum where there are depictions of graffiti and with the help of a tablet you can understand something.
