Palais Longchamp, Marseille

4.2
Palais Longchamp is famous for its intricately designed architecture, accented by the garden it faces. The palace was created to celebrate the construction of the Canal de Marseille, which brought water from the Durance River to Marseille. Although the foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Orleans in 1839, the building took 30 years to complete, partly because of the enormous expense and partly because of difficulties with local regulations. • We took a taxi just to see the Palais Longchamp, we didn't have much time to walk, and it was worth it. It can be reached by metro without problem and has two museums that we do not enter. The architecture, fountains and gardens are an amalgam of styles with numerous columns and sculptures. The fountains cascade down into a large staircase and gardens.

  • A very beautifully preserved artifact since 1869. The gardens are well maintained and beautiful. The museum part is very rich if you are interested in natural life, animals can visit here.

  • First Sunday of a month museums are free. Art was really nicely exposed. Unfortunately no English descriptions, half of the exhibition in art museum was closed. Good place to take nice pic, after few minutes - nothing to do.
  • The Parc Longchamp deserves visiting. Really enjoyed walking. Also there are two very interesting museums.
