La Plagne, Macot-la-Plagne

#2 of 24 in Things to do in Macot-la-Plagne
Fun & Games · Sports Complex
La Plagne was constructed in 1992 for the Winter Olympics bobsled competition, and the track still hosts events and training sessions. View this technical marvel from a distance and imagine a bobsled rushing down at 112 kph (70 mph) towards the finish line. The track is 6,500 cubic m (8,500 cubic yards) of concrete cooled to -15 C (5 F) by 80 km (50 mi) of ammonia refrigerator piping. Fifteen ice workers manually apply water to generate ice up to 4 cm (1.6 inch) thick and 40 km (25 mi) of electrical conduit is wired in the track from start to finish, including timing, television cables, computers, and sensors. Planning Macot-la-Plagne trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.

  • Went on the Bob raft. Very professional setup. Speeds of about 50 mph and good g forces in corners. Price reasonable for a unique experience. Will try the luge, solo ride if I go again. Pity there...  more »
  • Great pub just off the slopes. Fab for apres ski or to shelter on a snowy day. They do a happy hour but drinks are generally priced ok. Live music some evenings.  more »
  • Been to several French resorts and this one of our favourites. Slightly gentler runs which were to our preferences. Nice runs into forests which are great in the more chilly January weather. Though many high snow sure runs making this a good option for Christmas and Easter bookings. Ski runs were well maintained with good snow making. Villages are quite pretty for French standards. Plenty of high capacity fast chair lifts though still odd short queue (not an issue for us) in late Jan. Plenty to explore and was great having a day in Les Arcs. Overall would highly recommend.
  • Great resort with lots of snow. Almost all pistes and lifts open. Great for beginner/intermediate skiers with lots of blues, some fairly flat, some towards red, and a good number of more challenging red pistes. Great transport links with free cable cars or shuttle buses between all villages. Plagne Centre has lots of nice restaurants and a few bars, so best suited for families who won't be disturbed by loud nightlife.
