Located on the coast between the D-Day landing beaches Omaha and Gold, Batterie Allemande de Longues-Sure-Mer is the only battery where you can view original 150 mm (6 in) guns. In 1944, the Germans built the battery, which consisted of four navy guns, each protected by a large concrete casemate, a command post, shelters for personnel and ammunition, and several defensive machine-gun emplacements. The night before D-Day, the battery was heavily bombed. On D-Day, Allied forces landed on the beach. The next day, the Germans surrendered. From this strategic point on top of a cliff overlooking the channel, you'll have a terrific panoramic view of the landing beaches. • Very poignant. Really demonstrated the scale of what had to be overcome and how brave the allies were. Really informative information boards and of course the bunkers with their huge guns still in place. All in well maintained and clean surroundings.
  • Excellent example of German defence construction. They are still finding remains and identifying bodies from DNA which is amazing. The guns which remain look suitably imposing and must have caused chaos for the allies on the beaches. Well worth a visit if you are interested in WW2 historical sites. This is one of the best
