Constructed in the 11th century, Chateau de Loches is visible today as ruins only. The building is exemplary of military architecture of the Norman period. Built 500 m (1,600 ft) above the Indre River, the huge castle is famous for its massive square keep. Come to view the interesting layout with each floor consisting of a single room surrounded by stone walls measuring 23.3 by 15.4 sq m (76 x 51 sq ft) with walls 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) thick.
