Constructed in the 11th century, Chateau de Loches is visible today as ruins only. The building is exemplary of military architecture of the Norman period. Built 500 m (1,600 ft) above the Indre River, the huge castle is famous for its massive square keep. Come to view the interesting layout with each floor consisting of a single room surrounded by stone walls measuring 23.3 by 15.4 sq m (76 x 51 sq ft) with walls 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) thick. Lovely town and fascinating castle with super virtual reality pads which reveal what areas of the castle were like back in the day. The castle grounds have beautiful plants and lots of seating.
The Chateau is fabulous but the Fortress is not for the faint hearted.
