Grande Place, Lille

Rising from the center square in Grande Place is the "Column of the Goddess," sculpted by Théophile Bra in 1842. Unlike many central plazas, this is not centered around a church or a belfry, making the statue the square's primary feature. The sculpture is a memorial of the Siege of 1792, when the Austrian army bombarded the city for nine days and nights, until determined citizens formed a resistance to stop the siege.
