Grande Place, Lille

#3 of 233 in Things to do in Lille
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Rising from the center square in Grande Place is the "Column of the Goddess," sculpted by Théophile Bra in 1842. Unlike many central plazas, this is not centered around a church or a belfry, making the statue the square's primary feature. The sculpture is a memorial of the Siege of 1792, when the Austrian army bombarded the city for nine days and nights, until determined citizens formed a resistance to stop the siege. You'll find quaint boutiques, artistic cartouches, and bustling markets housed in 17th-century buildings surrounding the square. • One of the best place in Lille. ♡
  • Alluring architecture and a huge space in the center used for fairs and Christmas markets. Lots of cafés, restaurants and stores nearby. You can choose to sit in the open seats in the restaurant just in front of opera. The prices around are standard. Love the view.
