St. Bernard founded the Cistercian Abbaye de Vaucelles in 1131. At its peak, it was the largest Roman Catholic Church belonging to the Cistercian Order in Europe. Among its holy relics are a thorn said to be from the crown that Jesus Christ wore at his crucifixion. Much of the abbey was completely destroyed during the French Revolution and World War I, but since the 1970s, a local nonprofit organization has been working to restore it to its former glory. Today you can see the outline of some of the destroyed buildings marked on the ground by lavender. You can also tour the parts already restored, as well as pay a visit to the site's medieval garden.
