The Fort l'Écluse (or Fort de l'Écluse) is close to the village of Collonges, Ain in Eastern France. It commands the Rhone valley and is a natural entrance into France from Switzerland between the Vuache hills and the Jura Mountains.Make Fort L'Ecluse part of your personalized Leaz itinerary using our Leaz online day trip planner.
The fort was founded by a Duke of Savoy, and completed by Vauban in the reign of Louis XIV. It was destroyed by the Austrians in 1815, but was rebuilt by the French, and at the same time considerably strengthened and heightened. The high-road intersects a portion of this fortification.
Fort L'Ecluse Reviews
Very interesting castle and a witness if French Swiss military history. The place was already now by Julius Cesar and later was a fortification. But the most amazing thing (and quite strenuous, too... more »
If you just wish to visit the fort itself then of course you can. And it's lovely, my 2 boys and I ended the day sat in the courtyard and watching the Jazz Festival. It was divine. But that wasn't... more »
Really worth going to for both Walker and climbers. The castle is full of history and there is great scenery from the outside. Also included are a multitude of art gallery and an exhibit about the local bats in the area. All placed carefully into the old castle in interior. The castle is split in two. the lower castle which cover most of the ground floor, exhibits and gallery's and much of the castle. and the castle superior at the top. The castle sections are connected by tunnels that lead up and are alot of steps so be wary of this. From the castle superior you get fantastic views of the valley and well worth the hard walk. much of the castle superior is currently inaccessible though but still worth getting there. There is also something for climbers which I couldn't try at the time but i believe its about climbing on top or towards the top of the castle superior and costs slightly different. For walkers its 6 euros.
Astonishing scenario, beautiful deeps and river to be seen from the fort which is nicely kept with a good cafeteria and bar. Memorable.
