Made entirely of stone blocks--cut and assembled by hand, without the use of cement or mortar--Abbaye du Thoronet lies in forested hills between Draguignan and Brignoles. The abbey buildings, church, and cloisters were built from 1160 to 1190 and reflect the Ancient style of architecture. The compound also includes an adjoining chapter house, dormitory, storeroom, and cloisters. Wander the site at your leisure, or ask about a guided tour. Pleasant place if architecture is your thing . The entry fee is a little steep for what is on offer. For children , not very interesting I think. One suggestion to bring the site and its history alive would be to add video areas with audio soundtrack showing the lives of the monks and so on. There is nothing like this only signs and f your French is limited then so is the experience . Needs more work to make a visit worthwhile.
Such an inspiring abbaye in the middle of Provence. A big plus for architects to visit, there is some contemporary design pieces. The olive tress garden is amazing along with the inner church.
