When you visit Dune du Pilat, you'll immediately realize why this immense, tall dune is one of the most visited natural sites in the entire country. Officially called the Dune of Pilat, this unique land mass located in Arcachon Bay is the tallest sand dune in Europe and a favorite site for hikers and windsurfers. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and an enormous pine forest, this dune on a peninsula is one of the most unique landscapes in all of France. Locals call it a "Sand Monster" or a "Menacing Sand Wall." Thanks to recent developments, you can reach the dune easily by car. Dune du Pilat Reviews
À faire lors d'un séjour à Arcachon ! Physique certes, mais beau paysage à voir, il faisait pas très beau ce jour là mais malgré tout, on a apprécié la vue donné au sommet de la dune. more »To do during a stay in Arcachon! Physical certainly, but beautiful landscape to see, it was not very beautiful that day but despite everything, we enjoyed the view given at the top of the dune.
C'est de très loin le lieu le plus couru de la place. Access is easy both by car and bus where Line 1 from Arcachon station drops you off for a small Euro with a nice tour of the upper town of Arcachon. The tourist huts at the entrance before the ascent do not bode well. The ascent of the dune is very physical, arduous, steep, demanding, especially if you refuse to use the stairs made available. And suddenly it's absolute enchantment: the wind increases in power and it's the breath cut off by the effort of the ascent and the beauty of the place that a whole stretch of sand, altitude, wild beauty and tranquillity suddenly grabs you. There is of course the panoramic view on the ocean side (the Arguin basin opposite, the Cap-Ferret peninsula a little further to the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye can see) but the one offered to the south and east the immense forest of the Landes is otherwise more moving and you suddenly plunges into an ocean of serenity. Despite the impressive mass of people who, at all times and in all seasons, tread this magical sand, the dune keeps its mystery and its wild character: this is a real monument that nature has erected for us!
Amazing place, although approaches are a bit crowded. Easy to get away from crowds once you are on top.
Very entertaining to visit with friends. The views are incredible. Worth a visit.
