Chateau de La Roche-Guyon, La Roche-Guyon

The tenth-century builders of Chateau de La Roche-Guyon dug the castle into a limestone cliff that overlooks the Seine. It was impossible to see the castle from the river, yet the castle had a wide view of the valley--making it an ideal defensive structure for medieval warfare. The manor house that stands today was built in the 12th century and continued to serve this purpose right up through World War II, when German Field Marshall Rommel made the castle his headquarters. Today, it serves as a museum with guided tours. Use our La Roche-Guyon route planner to arrange your visit to Chateau de La Roche-Guyon and other attractions in La Roche-Guyon.

  • I was very surprised by this castle landlocked in the cliff, overlooking a magnificent dungeon. The tour begins with a beautiful staircase, and we sink into rooms carved into the rock. The terraces offer a superb view of the Seine. The tapestries are really beautiful, clear and there are many. We could not have access to the dungeon: too bad!

  • The chateau is very impressive from the outside however most of the rooms are empty and it generally needs a lot of restoration. One of the rooms has four excellent tapestries. If you are in the area,...  more »

  • The castle itself is beautiful and so is the surrounding village which is quiet and relaxing to walk around. The castle is built on huge chalk cliffs making the hike up challenging but well worth it. If you are going to Normandy or to Monet's garden in Giverny, La Roche-Guyon is well worth it and I liked it better that Giverny- much less crowded and history is more interesting than art anyway.
  • Marvelous old chateau, which was rommel's hq in WWII. Wish they had more of the original furniture.
