La montagne des singes, Kintzheim

#2 of 37 in Parks in Bas-Rhin
Take a side trip to the Atlas Mountains without leaving the region. Escape into the world of the Barbary Macaque. Wander through 60 acres of pristine forest to observe free roaming macaques frolic and play with their young and interact with their troupes in a natural setting. The Barbary Macaque is the only free-living primate in Europe, and La montagne des singes or "Monkey Mountain" is dedicated to the protection and conservation of these feisty primates. Make sure to purchase bags of popcorn at the front gate or, if you’re too shy, enjoy watching any number of feedings throughout the day. Listen in as guides and conservationists discuss the importance of preserving the species. • Visit a dreary October day, which allowed to be only a few people in the park and enjoy the life of these primates and also the wonder in the eyes of my little children. The staff is present not only to explain their lives but also to remind us of the safety rules to avoid accidents. I found it very professional, do not see reminders to order, but explanations of the attitudes of monkeys that only these people manage to decipher. What an extraordinary moment to see these monkeys at the time of a small distribution of fruits and vegetables, one can't help but laugh when each of them seeks to get the best piece and go into hiding to enjoy it. This experience will remain in the eyes of my grandchildren.

  • Many monkeys have come close. A lot of explanations about the species. I especially thank the mountain of monkeys for sending a stuffed stash to my son for participating in the children's games. He was really very happy and surprised with the number of participants.

  • Amazing to walk with be able to feed the monkeys. Staff were attentive and all around the park to look out for the public. Reasonably priced. Very reassuring. Shame all the talks were in French only. Really enjoyed the visit.
  • The shelter is very nice. The staff very professional and helpful. The monkeys are so cute. Recommended for a couple of hours.
