Must see · Castle · Historic Site
The Château de Hautefort is a French château and gardens located in the town of Hautefort in the Dordogne. The castle was originally a mediaeval fortress that was reconstructed in the 17th century, and embellished with a jardin à la française. In 1853, the landscape architect, Count of Choulot, redesigned the gardens, adding a landscape garden, geometric flower gardens, topiary gardens imitating the domes of the château, and a long tunnel of greenery. Next to the formal gardens is a hill with an Italian garden with winding shaded paths. Notable trees in the park include a Magnolia grandiflora and a Cedar of Lebanon. The gardens are listed by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of the Ministry of Culture of France as one of the Notable Gardens of France.

  • A beautifully presented Château, the rooms are very impressive with lovely furnishings. The gardens have the most amazing topiary. This Château is really well worth a visit for the fantastic views...  more »
  • Well maintained ‘Maison’ in a gorgeous town (which unfortunately has seen better days, the town not the castle) Well restored and absolutely gorgeous, minutely manicured gardens!  more »

  • Beautiful setting high atop a hill with the small town of the same name sheltering beneath its ramparts. Fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. The gardens are impressive and very formal. The castle interior is interesting but not sensational. We had some refreshments in the town before making our way back to the car. A great way to spend a morning
  • Lovely Chateau, well laid out. Beautiful gardens. We visited with three children and bought the kids discovery booklet a bargain at €3 each, full of questions and information about the chateau, the children got a small gift at the end for answering the questions. As adults it made us look at things we may if missed , so worth picking up one just for fun. We wandered around for several hours and had a great day. Would definitely recommend a visit
