Fort Boyard, Fouras

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Fouras
A lone fortress in the waters of the Pertuis d'Antioche, Fort Boyard has walls as high as 66 ft (20 m). The oval-shaped fortress is 223 ft (68 m) long and 102 ft (31 m) wide. Construction on the fort began in 1801 under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, but was only completed in 1857. The fort was used as a military prison after the 1870s. A game show by the same name, filmed on the premises, added to the site's popularity. • Took the boat trip to see the fort quite exspensive but it is a tourist attraction so go with the flow the run out took just over the hour and was a little choppy basic light refreshments to buy....  more »
  • From la Pointe de la Fumée, Fouras an expensively priced boat trip around Ft Boyard and Ile d'Aix. Probably better viewed on TV or UTube  more »
  • The boat trip towards the fort is more fun that the actual fort. Unless you are part of a TV crew, you cannot access the fort, which is a shame.
  • Can be seen in the distance from Fouras. 2h boat trips from La Rochelle will take you around. Cannot enter the Fort though.
