Fort de Vaux is a must-visit site for history lovers. Fort de Vaux is the ultimate symbol of bravery of the French soldiers who were led by Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal in the first World War. Started in 1881, it took around three years to build the fort. It was built to house 150 men. Fort de Vaux was the second fort that fell in the horrific battle of Verdun. The first fort to fall was Fort Douaumont, because it was virtually undefended and was captured by a small German army, whereas Fort de Vaux was fully garrisoned when it was attacked. Though the fort has been heavily damaged, you can still see the deep interior corridors and stations as they are still intact. You can also witness a 75mm cannon that is still equipped in one of the side bunkers of the fort. It is a perfect site for an educational visit for young children as they can visit for free. For a fort that could not fight back it is one story that you should visit to understand. The walk with the audio guide is brilliant. Do the 2 forts in a day. A great experience. more »

Not as extensive as Fort Douaumont, but just as informative and very similar. Not as damp either. Can do either fort, but both can be combined on one ticket at a discount. Audio guide is included in..... more »

Great site for WW1 history buffs and Battlefield 1 players.

Audio guide isn't really well done technically although information is interesting enough. Still better to have it than nothing! The kid's activity sheet could be much more appealing. Staff was ok - Aftee the fort, walk in the forest around. It's a unique experience especially during Summer and autumn months.
