#12 of 85 in Historic Sites in Pyrenees-Orientales
Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Originally founded in approximately 840, Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa was flooded in 878, forcing the monks to take refuge in the countryside. The abbey was eventually occupied by the Cuixà, a small community dedicated to Saint Germanus. Major renovations and upgrades beginning in 956 led to the present state of the abbey, which boasts an impressive main altar. You can explore the abbey's tall, square tower. Impressive trees and scenic surroundings make it a very popular attraction. Plan to see Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa and other attractions that appeal to you using our Codalet online trip planner.

  • In many ways this place reminded us of some of the abbeys in Wales - a working church surrounded by what would once have been. The whole place is evocative of a large community; the size of the church is astounding, the cloisters and the crypt equally large. We stayed for Mass following the morning opening which really added to the experience of a holy site.
