Must see · Architectural Building · Religious Site
Built in the 12th century, L'Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine is one of the five major Romanesque abbeys in France with 19th century interior restorations. It boasts the most impressive steeple and the characteristic silhouette due to its massive oblong architecture and octagonal bell tower. It is built from a type of limestone called "arkose" that gives the abbey its signature color. The exterior decoration and mosaics are ornately made with a type of volcanic rock called "basalt." Visit the interior adorned with 19th century Italian-style frescoes that are rare in France and the ornately carved "chapiteaux" (flared columns) with the famous "Last Supper" carving.
