Pont Valentre, Cahors

Must see · Bridge · Tourist Spot
A symbol of Cahors, Pont Valentre is a 14th-century fortified stone arch bridge crossing the Lot River. The medieval construction includes six gothic arches and three square towers with turret. The western tower hasn't survived. This bridge is part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Legend has it that the bridge's architect could not finish his work, so he sold his soul to the devil. Look for the carved stone devil trying to tear off the bridge's cornerstone, but failing; his fingers are embedded in the seams between the stones.
