In repentance for marrying, cousins William the conqueror and Mathilda of Flanders ordered Abbaye aux Hommes built along with its neighbor, Abbaye aux Dames ("Ladies' Abbey"). The men's monastery was dedicated to St. Stephen. Each church is considered one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in Normandy. Built in Caen stone during the 11th century, both churches had the ribbed vault, used for the first time in France, added to them in about 1120. The current Hôtel de Ville, or town hall, of Caen is built onto the building’s South Transept.
But also the seat of the Caen Town Hall, the Abbey for Men is a beautiful abbey, with a splendid cloister and all this in the heart of the city. If you have time to spend the evening, do not hesitate, it is beautifully lit.
A voir la nuit, y revenir le jour. Charge d’histoire. Guillaume nous a conquis. Comme Mathilde..., son épouse, nous reviendrons. more »To see at night, to come back by day. Load of history. William conquered us. Like Mathilde..., his wife, we will return.
Truly historic and very impressive. Built by William the Conqueror abs now his resting place, there are guided tours but also a good self guided one. Tickets fron the Hotel de Ville, a large historic building next door. The Abbey itself is free but the small coast to see the cloister and exhibitions is worth it. Touching permanent exhibition about the abbey's use as a refuge during the D-Day landings and liberation (and in the process major destruction) of Caen by the Allies in WWII.
Very interesting Abbey where William the Conqueror is buried well worth a visit
