Bouches-du-Rhone

4.2
Named after the mouth of the Rhône River where it meets the Mediterranean Sea, Bouches-du-Rhône is a department created during the French Revolution from the western part of the former province of Provence, with its history closely linked to Provence. The department is well-represented in French art as Paul Cézanne painted numerous representations of Mont Sainte-Victoire and Vincent van Gogh spent much of his life here, painting many scenes of the area. The largest city in the department, Marseille, contains a major industrial harbor, which today serves as France's largest commercial port. You can both enjoy a seaside vacation or charter a vessel to take you out onto the Mediterranean. Marseille has been an important harbor since before Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul, and this Roman presence has left numerous historical attractions across the cities and rural communities of the department. Bouches-du-Rhone is in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Put Bouches-du-Rhone at the heart of your travel plans by using our France road trip planning website .
