Port of the Moon, the old town in Bordeaux, represents France's ninth-largest city and a World Heritage Site, valued for its architecture and economic advantage as a port city. The nickname comes from the moon-like bend of the Garonne River, upon which the city sits. Founded in 300 BCE by the Celts and known as the longtime capital of the wine industry, Bordeaux is second only to Paris for its number of historical monuments. Visit the tourist office to book a tour, or simply stroll along the waterfront at your own pace. Key sites include the majestic Bourse; Esplanade des Quinconces, the largest square in Europe; Rue Sainte-Catherine, the longest pedestrian street in France; and the Musée des Beaux Arts, featuring paintings by Veronese, Rubens, Van Dyck, Renoir, Matisse, and Picasso.
