Somme American Cemetery and Memorial honors the World War I military from France and the United States. Most lost their lives while serving in American units attached to British armies or in operations near Cantigny. The headstones, set in regular rows, are separated into four plots by paths that intersect at the flagpole near the top of the slope. At the eastern end of the cemetery a massive bronze door with an American eagle leads into the chapel, whose outer walls contain sculptures of military equipment. • This cemetery administered by the American Battlefields Monument Commission holds 1,844 soldiers who lost their lives in the breakthrough of the Hindenburg Line along the nearby St Quentin tunnel - they were members of the 30th and 27th American Divisions. Three Medal of Honor winners are buried here. Best time to visit is around American Memorial Day - last Monday in May - when each grave is bedecked with both a French and American flag. The chapel walls are inscribed with the names of 333 men who went missing in action in the area.
  • The grounds are kept in such an impeccable state, it makes you feel so proud to be an American and pride the director and all his staff take to keep this perfect goes beyond of anyone would expect. So much attention to detail is the same as Arlington and Normandy. A must to visit when in France.
