Rocher de la Vierge, Biarritz

Must see · Lookout · Monument
Rocher de la Vierge, a statue of the Virgin Mary, was installed in 1865 by grateful sailors who were saved from being shipwrecked by a mysterious light atop these rocks. Napoléon III built a wooden bridge to the rocks looking out over the Atlantic as an anchoring point for a dike. The original bridge couldn't withstand the elements, so it was replaced in 1887 with an iron bridge designed by Gustav Eiffel (of the tower fame). • I would say I would avoid central hours because even raining is crowded. But the place is great even to walk a little bit.  more »
  • Gorgeous and stunning views of the coastline from this point. Must visit for some splendid photographic opportunities!  more »

  • Fairly nice, but felt a little more overrun with tourists than most other similar things we visited throughout our trip. This experience doesn't stand out in my memory...if choosing between the two, I'd check out the lighthouse instead (though it may have a long lineup)
  • Absolutely stunning! Make sure to check the weather before visiting as sometimes due to storms or surges the attraction can be closed for safety reasons.
