is a historic castle situated in the city of Angers, Loire Valley, in the department of Maine-et-Loire. This place has a rich history, and you will greatly appreciate this castle, which was built in the 9th century, for its unique structural design. Further construction in the thirteenth century added to the size of this castle. The castle served as a fortress because of its strategic location, overlooking the River Maine. Tourists coming to the castle can view the interiors that are tastefully decorated. Parisian tapestry belonging to ancient ages adorns the castle. The chapel inside the castle is also worth a visit. Despite suffering damages during the World War and later, it has been renovated and is a museum of intricate and priceless tapestry work. Chateau d'Angers Reviews
This chateau looks like a fortress ... which it is. I had no time to visit the Chateau's interior but only went in to see the space where a magnificient tapestry is displayed. It is titled "The... more »
Visited Angers whilst staying in Nantes. Wow what a Chateau. Fantastic building and fantastic views all around. Loved the sculptures there. If you only have a few hours spare whilst nearby in France..... more »
What a fantastic chateau. The suggested time is 1hr 30, but we must have been in there for 4 hours. When visiting it's a must to hire the guide phones, particularly when looking at the tapestry as it explains each smaller panel - and what a fantastic tapestry, in my view it surpasses the Bayeux tapestry. Well worth taking a picnic in with you, and taking time to relax on the sun chairs available. We didn't leave enough time to look properly around Angers itself, but will be going back as it is a really historic city with cobbled streets and lots of small independent shops. A great day out, or a weekend if you have time.
Must have been such a powerful castle in its time. The Revelation tapestry is amazing. The guide really knew his stuff. The tapestry is so large that the guided tour (in French - electonic guides in English and other languages available) is rather demanding, but worth the effort.
