Aland Maritime Museum reveals the stories of merchant voyages and artifacts from distant lands, and exhibits one of the world's only four-masted sailing ships still in its original condition. The exhibits include objects like a stolen 18th-century pirate flag and pots that the crew drank their tea from. Read logbooks and archives to find out about adventures at sea, pirate attacks, and talk of mythical creatures. You'll be able to browse through personal letters and diaries of successful brokers and weary sailors. The site features numerous family-friendly interactive stations, including a mast that kids can climb and a karaoke zone. Call in advance, as some sections of the museum require reservations. Note that you can use your ticket to visit the ship, or to return to the museum for a second visit. Well worth a visit when you are in Mariehamn - lots of things to do and really gives you an overview about the island and its history (in addition to the information about ships and life on the sea). more »

If you are in Mariehamn, this should not be missed, as Åland lives off shipping. Here you can see a good cross section of it. more »

Nice museum with three storeys of exhibits and a souvenir shop. You can see models of various windjammers (the last and the largest tall ships) that crossed the Atlantic and brought cargo to Europe. There is a room with Cape Horn exhibition and ship manoeuvre simulator. You can also have a temporary tattoo made. There is a children "underwater" playground in the basement. Place worth visiting!

Really good museum. Most of it is recently renovated and well accessible for handicapped people and people with strollers. Some of the older parts of the museum are less accessible though, but its not insurmountable getting past the few obstacles there are. It's s good place to do after checking out from your hotel and wait for the ferry off the island. Pretty good place to bring the kids as there's an audio guide on the ship and a small treasure hunt inside the museum. Kids under 7 get in for free. Unfortunately none of the museums on the islands have a cafe, that includes this one. There is however a high tier restaurant in the same building and an outdoor serving area which is open during the summer months.
