Temppeliaukio Church, Helsinki

Known for its striking copper dome, Temppeliaukio Church has been carved from rock in the heart of the city. Designed by siblings Tim and Tuomo Suomalainen and finished in 1969, this distinctive Lutheran church is directly excavated into rock. Explore the church's interior, which consists of rock and marble walls, with the shining copper dome supported by concrete beams at the top of the structure. Note the light shining in through the skylight on what is commonly called the Church of Rock. Take time to listen to the acoustics, made possible by the church's exposed walls. Temppeliaukio Church is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Helsinki Edition.

  • As I enter the Church, it is not possible to imagine what has been done within it, I will not give details since they are all public. It is a visit from our unmissable point of view. How does the imagination of architects achieve that perfect austerity combined with a delicate and rustic elegance in all its lines ? . The acoustics are remarkable. Readers will be able to know details of their entire story on the WEB, it makes no sense for me to say it here. Simply spectacular !

  • A very nice and special church-an architectural experience. The rock walls and exposed stones create a very special and calm atmosphere. Is really worth a visit. Located 20-30 min. On the foot from the center.

  • This Lutheran church is a contemporary masterpiece. It was in a very inner city location which was a surprise. The acoustics were superb, we were lucky enough to have an operatic singer (from another group) burst into song, which was very moving
  • Such a unique and beautiful church. Hard to believe it’s built into a rock! There’s a small entry fee, but it’s also included in the Helsinki Card. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long and soak up the ambience as there are no bathrooms, and I was directed to the shopping centre which is a 10 minute walk away. So from that perspective, be aware it doesn’t rate very high on accessibility.
