Helsinki Cathedral, Helsinki

A product of Russian expansionism in the region, Helsinki Cathedral was built by architect Carl Ludvig Engel as the pinnacle of the city's Senate Square. The cathedral was constructed between 1830 and 1852 in the neoclassical style as a tribute to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. After Finland gained independence in 1917, it became a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral. Take in views of the structure's distinctive green domes and white pillars and walk through the church to appreciate its Greek cross layout. Over 350,000 tourists visit this cathedral every year. • In good weather, you can have a good time: take a break from long walks around the city on the steps of the Cathedral, admire the architecture of the cathedral and the buildings adjacent to the cathedral square, remember the history of relations between Russia and Finland. It's a very atmospheric place!

  • Very beautiful church from outside. Plain from inside but I guess that is by design. You can spot the church from anywhere near the Central area. We visited in on a sunny day and it looked picturesque. Inside was very quiet in spite of this being a tourist attraction. You can sit and reflect in peace at this place.
  • Such a beautiful and captivating old building with lots of character! I literally could have spent hours just mesmerised by this old church. Loved the intricate details inside of the church too.
