Vabamu – The Museum of Occupations and Freedom documents the country's tragic suffering and amazing resilience through a world war and five decades of communist rule. Visit the museum, dedicated to Estonia's unfortunate experiences between 1940 and 1991, and you'll see how the country ultimately survived its conquests by both the Nazis and the Soviets. Explore the numerous displays and exhibits memorializing the experience of the people of Estonia during those dark times. You'll find stark reminders of the repressive methods used by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to subdue Estonia and its residents. Don't miss the exhibits dealing with Estonia's independence from the USSR and little-known issues with the Russian Army afterward. • Very balanced information without indoctrination. The videos with eyewitness accounts are depressing. The audio guide in German makes listening easier. Incredibly, this will to freedom in this little people! Allow at least two hours of time.

  • A beautiful yet heart wrenching museum. I highly recommend this place to everyone who visits. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the technology was down the day we went and we still had to pay full price which wouldn’t have been a big issue except to really understand the exhibits you need technology.
  • It’s really a must-see when visiting Tallinn. You can deep dive into the (Soviet) history and learn more about repression, occupation and the liberation of Estonia. I highly recommend this museum if you wann learn more about the past, what nowadays is more topical than ever.
