Devil's Door (Puerta del Diablo), San Salvador

#2 of 9 in Parks in San Salvador
Tread the sloping paths to Devil's Door (Puerta del Diablo), the highest point of San Salvador and a rock formation steeped in local myth. An ascent that reaches 1,250 m (4,101 ft) above sea level, the spot serves as a window onto San Salvador, with rolling green hills stretching out to the Pacific coast and views of the San Vincente volcano. Head lower down the trail for a refreshment at a small collection of food and drink stands. The rock formation itself was once a single boulder, split now into three pieces and named "Chulo", "Chulito" and "Chula", with local legend telling of a pact with the devil gone wrong, causing the split. Other stories tell of brutal sacrifices and executions that took place at this great monument.
