Catedral Metropolitana, San Salvador

#3 of 17 in Historic Sites in El Salvador
The final resting place of assassinated archbishop Oscar Romero, Catedral Metropolitana has a colorful history hiding behind its towering white facade. The principal church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador, the cathedral was completed and inaugurated after years of construction in 1999, built on the previous site of the Temple of Santo Domingo. Read up on your history before visiting, as the white simplistic architecture only hints at the building's eventful past. In 1980, a shooting and subsequent stampede at the cathedral during archbishop Romero's funeral shocked the nation. More recent controversy involved the removal of the famous and much loved mural that once adorned its entrance, by the then Archbishop of San Salvador. • It is best visited as the burial site of Oscar Arnulfo Romero, the priest killed by the government in 1980. The cathedral is nice, very well kept and clean, you get a nice surprise compared to others that are old and dirty. At the bottom is the chapel dedicated to Monsignor Romero. It is worth visiting and knowing a little about the history of the tragedy, which is taught with photographs and texts on explanatory panels.

  • More classical church when compared to the El Rosario church, but, besides imposing, has a very beautiful interior. At the entrance there are some ambulants, but, nothing different to any big city. It's worth the visit.

  • U really feel u are in Latin America, security with guns .... old Spanish gospel songs and gracious God we will be back home soon. In all the hustle there is definitely a calm and legions of pigeons all around. The epicentre of the cultural and political revolution
  • Though not worshippers we were welcomed to enter during an evening service to appreciate the restored beauty.
