Valley of the Queens, Nile River Valley

Nestled between the western cliffs in a ravine shaped like a Y, Valley of the Queens features over 90 tombs carved out of rock of the wives and children of the pharaohs from 1550-1070 BCE. It has been speculated that this location was chosen because of a sacred grotto at its entrance dedicated to the ancient Egyptian goddess of love, joy, and motherhood. Even though many tombs were ransacked during antiquity, some of them preserve their lavish decorations up to this day. The most prominent example is Queen Nefertari's tomb, which is closed for visitors due to the fragile state of its polychrome reliefs. Reportedly some of the guided tours can acquire a special visiting permit for a considerable fee. • Worth a visit. The tombs are good but not as impressive as those of the valley of the kings. If you have limited time then best to see only the ones at the valley of the kings  more »
  • I only went for Nefertari's Tomb and it was well worth it. The wall paintings were absolutely amazing, they looked brand new. I arrived at around 09:30 and I had the place all to myself. You are only ...  more »

  • I found both the Valley of the Queens and the Valley of the Kings to be incredible but the tomb walls in the Valley of the Queens were being protected by thick, somewhat dirty glass so the experience of being inside the tombs was a bit less enjoyable for me. They are still worth seeing though and are extremely beautiful. I don't recommend buying a photo ticket for the Valley of the Queens, but I do for the Valley of the Kings. The two photos below show the difference between the glassless tombs in the Valley of the Kings vs the protected tombs here.
  • An entire valley of lesser tombs for the Queens of Egypt. NO pictures allowed but the tombs here are better preserved since the tomb robbers were more interested in the larger caches of gold to be found in the Pharaohs' tombs.
