#1 of 179 in Things to do in Giza
The last of the original Seven Wonders of the World, Pyramids of Giza include a complex of World Heritage-listed ancient monuments, including the Great Pyramid. Dating back to around 2560 BCE, the pyramids were built by thousands of workers under the command of successive pharaohs, with teams of men carving millions of stone blocks at nearby quarries, transporting them to the site, then lifting them into position. The pyramids were used as tombs for the pharaohs, with interior temples, chambers, and galleries filled with offerings. The three main pyramids testify to the power of the pharaohs and the ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians--they have also inspired countless artists, architects, and rulers since their construction. • We spent three days with Jorge and it was an exceptional guide. From the first moment we arrived at the airport it gave us a tremendous confidence and security. We resolved all our doubts, helped us in everything we asked and taught us all those corners of Cairo that if you are not local there is impossible to get to and understand. His great kindness, respect, open mind and his way of being made a 10 trip that would recommend everyone 100% if you travel to Cairo. Thanks for all of Jorge. jorge_egipcio@hotmail.com

  • The pyramids of Giza are the only surviving Ancient Wonder of the World and one of the most famous tourist attractions in the modern world. They are some of the oldest sacred sites in our index and certainly among of the most impressive. Although it is clear the pyramids were used for the burial of pharaohs, the construction, date, and possible symbolism of the Giza pyramids are still not entirely understood. This mystery only adds to the attractiveness of these ancient wonders and many modern people still regard Giza as a spiritual place. A number of fascinating theories have been offered to explain the “mystery of the pyramids,” one of which is summarized below. Giza is the most important site on earth for many New Age followers, who are drawn by the pyramids’ mysteries and ancient origins. Since 1990, private groups have been allowed into the Great Pyramid, and the majority of these have been seekers of the mystical aspects of the site. But even the most skeptical visitor cannot help but be awed by the great age, grand scale and harmonic mathematics of the pyramids of Giza.
  • Build around 2560 B.C. the Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of the three pyramids of Giza plateau and the first one you encounter after entering. Doesn't matter how many times have I seen it in books, movies, but staring at it in real, I was simply awestruck!! Constructed over 20 years and 3 million stone blocks, it reminds us how advanced this ancient civilization was in every aspect. Just looking at it makes one feel humble and blessed.
