Trip Planner: South America / Ecuador / Zamora-Chinchipe Province / Zamora / Podocarpus National Park
Hike through the dense green jungle at Podocarpus National Park to get up close and personal with Mother Nature's diversity. The national reserve supports a wide range of wildlife and vegetation: 4,000 species of plants, 68 species of mammals, 560 species of birds, and over 1,200 different insects have been identified. The jungle's most populous residents include frogs, lizards, snakes, birds, bears, and jaguars. Your adventure will take you past dramatic scenery including waterfalls, rivers, and panoramic views of surrounding mountain ranges. From there you walk about 20 min until you reach the interpretation centre. The place is wonderful, green everywhere, butterflies accompany the trail, water everywhere and certain birds. We stayed one night and visited the Mighty Waterfall (10min), The gossip (5 min). We went to the River Bombuscaro (5 min) and went up to the viewpoint (50 min). We just missed the 8-hour Higuerones trail. The Podocarpus and its marked trails are worth a visit. The place has free shelters. You can go with sleeping bag and prepared for mosquitoes.
