Museo de la Ciudad, Quito

#7 of 46 in Museums in Quito
History Museum · Hidden Gem · Specialty Museum
Perfectly complementing the city's historical hub, Museo de la Ciudad tells the story of Quito and its traditions, legends, and customs through displays of art, maps, and everyday objects. The museum occupies the city's oldest building, originally the San Juan de Dios Hospital, which dates back to the mid 16th century. Journey through the centuries and find out how the lives of the residents of this important trade point were influenced by the exchange of goods, languages, ideas, and beliefs. Inspect dioramas of a typical kitchen, pharmacy, and local shop. The exhibits cover the period from the indigenous people to the arrival of the Spaniards. Two terraces of the adjoined cafe offer a quiet break with a view of the historical part of the city. • A well presented and plainly well thought out attempt to chronicle Quito's history from the earliest of times. Sadly we only had 40 minutes here since the place closed earlier than expected at 4.30pm. Dioramas were somewhat turgid but use of marquetry and genuine artefacts was appreciated.
  • This is a rather well-done museum of the history of Quito. While there was some English signage, much of the exhibits were only in Spanish. For international visitors, adding dual-language signage would be very cost-effective and would enhance the visit. Overall - very well done and worth a visit.
