The Wall of Tears, Puerto Villamil

Landmark · Tourist Spot
On a tour of Isabella Island, visit The Wall of Tears, a grim historical site that local legend says still emanates cries. Built by the island's penal colony from 1945 to 1959, the wall reportedly caused thousands of deaths of prisoners, who were forced to carry stones in the sweltering heat and isolation for days on end. Trek the scenic 7 km (4.3 mi) path, lined with mangroves, and you might spot some giant tortoises or other interesting Galapagos species along the way. • Few suggestions: Rent a bike Go early while it's still cool. Take more water than you expect you'll need. The road along the beach alternates between stretches of asphalt, gravel, sand. Walk the bike through the deep sand. Once the road leaves the beach area, it's mostly packed gravel and easier pedaling. Last 2k is mostly uphill. Ride to the end on the way to the wall. Stop at the beaches and such on the way back. There's a staircase to the left of the wall. Make the effort to climb it and take the path to the end. Great views.
  • Nice trail leads to the site of a former penal colony where prisoners from a were forced to stack large volcanic rocks to form a seemingly pointless wall. "The weak will die and the strong will cry"
