Lake Assal, Djibouti
Dip your feet in the salty waters of Lake Assal, a crater lake situated at the top of the Great Rift Valley in the Danakil Desert. Although rich in minerals, the lake water does not support any life other than bacteria. Still, salt collection here--in the world's largest natural salt deposit--provides an income for local farmers. One of the hottest places on earth, the underground of the lake continuously evaporates, creating ever more layers of solid salt bed, over which you can even drive a car. Gaze at the surreal, sunken landscapes with scant thorny bushes, camels, lizards, small birds, and insects. Toilets: No!!! Souvenirs: There is a par dealer who sell their products there in the parking lot, who by the way were not intrusive at all. important!!! : Remember to carry your ID or passport (copy) with you!!!, I was controlled by the police & Hatte unfortunately never with me ... The officials hardly speak English (I can speak a bit Arabic) and they didn't want to let me go as I couldn't prove I had a residence permit ... It's been a long discussion!
I have never seen such a beautiful lake. The white horizon continues so far, and no lives are there around. more »
One of the most stunning places I have ever seen. A white salty coast and crystal clear turquoise water. Simply amazing!!! 💞
