Skagens Museum, Skagen

4.3
#1 of 121 in Museums in North Jutland
Must see · Art Museum · Specialty Museum
Skagens Museum exhibits naturalistic and plein air paintings by the late 19th-century members of the colony of Skagen painters. The main museum was founded by local businessmen and by the painters themselves in 1908. In addition to the main museum, you can visit the preserved homes of some of the artists, Anchers Hus and Drachmanns Hus. Both of these houses look exactly as if the artists are still living there. Combined, the three venues house more than 9,000 works of art. See the favorite subjects of Skagen artists, such as fishermen at work, fishermen's cottages, landscapes, and views into the artists' social life. Taste a homemade cake at the cafe in the garden house, which for a while served as artists' residence. Plan to visit Skagens Museum during your Skagen vacation using our convenient Skagen day trip planning app.

  • Well organized, German and English translations of the painting/artist information. Beautiful collection. I especially liked how the works were separated into two main sections to emphasize the contrast. Also enjoyed seeing the pre-paintings created by the artist before the final piece.
  • What a lovely collection, and so well displayed with coloured walls. I also very much appreciated the cardboard guides in English and German, which allowed us great insights. Very well written.
