Learn about the poet's life from his childhood years as the son of a struggling shoemaker, to his prolific career as an author at H. C. Andersens House. The museum opened in 1908 in the small yellow house, which is considered his birthplace. A reconstruction of the artist's study displays personal items, including his walnut writing desk and his writing set--glass ink containers on a brass-ornamented wooden tray. Take the time to hear his tales, such as "Little Mermaid" or "The Princess on the Pea," at one of the many listening posts. The poet's creative range is also evident through his drawings and collages. Buy a book by H.C. Andersen, available in several languages at the museum shop. Work out when and for how long to visit H. C. Andersens House and other Odense attractions using our handy Odense travel itinerary planner.

At the entrance we were told not to drink during the visit. So we left a bottle of milk and a bottle of water at the front desk. After the visit I went to the front desk to collect these two items. And I was told that the milk was thrown away!!!! I am very upset. And it was really difficult to explain my daughter what happened to her milk too. It is not a big deal to make a failure. But using excuses like ‘there are so many people here everyday’ ‘some one threw it away’ was really a bad idea. Admitting the failure would be much better. We would have no problem to accept it. My daughter said, maybe we should have left Dad to guard the milk ;) 😓😂
