Koldinghus, Kolding

4.3
#1 of 98 in Museums in South Jutland
Castle · Hidden Gem · History Museum
At Koldinghus, see where Danish kings received foreign ambassadors, presided over the high court, and held banquets and balls. The castle was originally built as a fortress in 1268, but it also served as a royal residency. Today, it houses a museum. See the collections of old furniture, Roman and Gothic church culture, and old Danish paintings. A fire that broke out in 1808 left the castle in ruins. The north side, facing the castle lake, is the oldest part still standing. See how some other parts--such as the south wing and the chapel--were only partially restored in order to maintain the memory of this dramatic episode. • Saw the exhibition Splendour of Power. It was absolutely amazing. And the castle itself has such a rich and interesting history from when it was built until today! I loved it.
  • A castle that has been re constructed. The only original figures are the external walls and some internal. Is a very big area to cover, they will give you modest map to help you guide yourself inside the castle. Mostly dedicated to the monarchy throughout history, really interesting and great displays. Entrance fee £15 a person. If you are in Kolding I highly recommend it.
