Frederiks Kirke (Marmorkirken), Copenhagen

Commonly known as the Marble Church, Frederiks Kirke (Marmorkirken) is an Evangelical Lutheran church with the largest religious dome in Scandinavia. Construction began in 1749, but due to financial troubles and unfortunate circumstances, the church remained unfinished until 1894. From the outside, the Baroque architecture is reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Make a quick stop inside to view the decorative lining of the dome, which spans 31 m (101 ft). Entry is free, but on certain days of the week you are allowed to pay a fee to climb to a viewpoint where you can enjoy bird's-eye views of the whole city. Check the website for further information, and for dates and times of services if you would like to worship. • The marble Church is a Lutheran church. A very beautiful dome of green color, the diameter of which is 31 meters. Inside the church there are two active bodies. A very beautiful structure both inside and outside.

  • While architecturally splendid, the church's interior was not all that impressive other the view of the dome, which is spectacular. At its location, the church sticks out like a jewel in a crown and m...  more »

  • A beautiful marble church on the east side of the city. You can pick up this attraction on a walk out to or from the Little Mermaid. Quite compact circular building, unusual in that it does not extend much beyond the extent of it's dome, so it's basically round inside which is pretty neat. The dome is probably the best feature and we found ourselves sitting for quite a while looking up at it in contemplative quietness. A lovely building.
  • Just the thought of visiting a church made out of Marble is impressive enough, but the inside of the church definitely adds that "wow" factor. Even though it's not as ornate as other churches, the clean cut architecture of the Marble church is incredible! It's located near Amalienborg so it's nice to visit while you're looking around the castles; it has an incredible vibe and it resembles the cathedral of St. Peter's square in the Vatican, with a similar dome even though not nearly as impressive, but still beautiful! Free entrance.
