Trip Planner: Europe / Czech Republic / Bohemia / Central Bohemian Region / Karlstejn / Karlstejn Castle
Towering over a busy little village, Karlstejn Castle once served as a hideaway for the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Seemingly unperturbed by the passage of time, this 600-year-old structure is situated just 30 km (18 mi) southwest of Prague. The castle's star attraction is a chapel designed by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV to hold his crown jewels, holy relics, and valuable documents. Centuries ago, this chapel safeguarded its treasures behind four doors with nineteen locks. Today, the chapel is open to visitors wishing to see its vaulted ceilings decorated with thousands of semiprecious stones. Most of the castle interior is accessible by guided tour only, so book your tickets in advance. Karlstejn Castle Reviews
Awesome place to checkout the grounds and get some pictures! It is NOT worth taking a tour through karlstejn, it was SO boring and felt like it took years. Better off hiking up to castle checking out ... more »

This is a beautiful castle, impressive in size and loads of things to photograph. Best advice is to arrive at 15:00 pm when there's fewer visitors and the sun is at the front side (for photos). Note that not all areas are accessible and to get inside the castle, you have to pay for a guided tour.
Worth the trip. Take the train from Prague station. A taxi quoted us 4000 crowns, but the train ticket was only around 50 crowns each. Be prepared for a decent walk up to the castle, at least a mile and quite steep. (They also offer carriage rides if the walk is too hard). Once at the top, you can get guided tours in English. Our guide was reasonably easy to understand. The castle itself is quite spartan, but worth the visit and has great views of the surrounding area. Had some delicious crepes on the way back down, right near the bottom.
