Trip Planner: Caribbean / Cuba / Villa Clara Province / Santa Clara / Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado
Learn about the Cuban Revolution at Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado, a national monument, museum, and memorial garden. The site centers around an armored train that President Batista sent to Santa Clara in 1958 in an attempt to change the outcome of the war. Carrying 373 armed soldiers, ammunition, and two month's worth of provisions, the train was attacked by 18 guerrillas under the command of Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The officers surrendered after Guevara bulldozed a portion of the track. The train carriages make up the museum rooms, displaying photographs and artifacts. Tour the memorial garden to see an obelisk dedicated to Guevara, and the bulldozer he used to orchestrate this victory against the odds.
