Camaguey Centro, Camaguey

#2 of 11 in Historic Sites in Camaguey
Must see · Historic Walking Area · Monument
Originally founded on the north coast of Cuba in 1515 and then moving inland in 1528 due to continuous pirate attacks, Camaguey Centro now exists as the country's second largest historic center. Resembling a maze, the city has 15 churches and offers winding alleys and forked streets that lead to squares. According to legend the city was designed this way as a defensive measure. Locals dispute this claim and say that the design is the result of a lack of planning. Tour the city and appreciate the colonial architecture, head to a plethora of restaurants and try some local cuisine, or people watch as you rest in one the city's squares.
