Croatian Museum of Naive Art, Zagreb

4.5
#2 of 33 in Museums in Zagreb
See an exhibit of 80 paintings, prints, and sculptures by self-taught Croatian and international artists at Croatian Museum of Naive Art. Between the 1930s and the 1980s, these works were produced mainly by peasants and working men who had created their own styles and achieved fame. This art movement thrives on freedom and creativity, but differs from amateur art due to its highly poetic nature. The museum's collection totals 1,850 pieces, which it exhibits in rotation. View these expressions of individualism, with the common themes of social events and gatherings, rural life and work, and the creations of untamed imagination. • This small gallery is located just a short walk from St. Mark's Church, opposite the Museum of Broken Hearts. Naive art, in Japanese, seems to be divided into genres called "simple school", and the roots of paintings created by people who have not received special painting techniques in rural areas. Indeed, there were many pictures that used pastel colors, had a soft touch, and the word "simple" applied, although there were no pictures with a shocking impression. In the leading museums in Europe, there are overwhelmingly many religious paintings, so even if Japanese people who are not familiar with Christianity see it, it does not come with a pin, but naive art has a lot of landscape paintings, so I enjoyed it unexpectedly. I don't know if it will be classified as naive art, but a picture of Taiji Harada in Japan is also decorated. The number of works is not so large. I think that it is possible to appreciate everything in 30 minutes if only a quick glance. There is also a free toilet in the back room.
