Blue Lake (Croatian: Modro jezero or Plavo jezero) is a karst lake located near Imotski in southern Croatia. Like the nearby Red Lake, it lies in a deep sinkhole possibly formed by the collapse of an enormous cave. The total depth from the upper rim is around 220 metres (720 ft), while water depth varies with season. In spring, when the snow from surrounding mountains melts, it can reach 90 m (300 ft), and in 1914 it reached 114 m (374 ft), overflowing the southern rim. The lake is a popular destination for hiking and sight-seeing.
Maximum dimensions of the lake are around 800 m × 500 m (2,600 ft × 1,600 ft), but they significantly vary due to big changes in the water level. At the end of the summer the lake may completely disappear.
In 1907 a road was built descending to the lake. In 1942, an earthquake caused a large landfall resulting in reduction of the lake's depth.

  • This lake is a beautiful natural attraction. It is worth going down there even if the path is in full sun...The hardest part is the ascent, count 45 minutes round trip. And the plus is to bathe in...  more »
  • Stunning view, you can swim also in the lake, but worth have a look from above too. The lake side is a short walk from the parking lot. Recommended  more »

  • Very nice, viewed it from the road above. Not possible to take the stroller down the path.
  • The Blue Lake is just fantastic. It’s a bit of a hike in and out as the path is just over 1/2 mile long with 450ft of elevation gain from bottom to the top, but it’s worth the effort. Take food and drink as you don’t want to have to go up and down any more than necessary. The lake is a sink hole and is just beautiful. Great swimming, diving and general fun that kept our teenage kids off the phones the whole time we were there. Will be back again soon.
