Reserva Biologica Isla del Cano, Osa Peninsula

#6 of 7 in Nature in Osa Peninsula
Isla del Caño is a small island in the Bahia de Corcovado (Corcovado Bay) in Osa Costa Rica. It is on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, 10mi west of Punta Llorona on Península de Osa. It rises steeply to a flat top of 123m in height.Caño Island National Park has been established as a protected national park as a part of the Osa Conservation Area, with a permanent ranger station on the island. It is a popular tourist destination for ecotourism such as whale watching, attracting visitors for its beaches, coral beds, and sea life. Researchers currently use the coral beds to study the factors surrounding coral death and recolonization. Marine life includes manta rays, dolphins, false killer whales, sea turtles, whales, a wide variety of fish, and possibly manatees as well. The limited diversity of terrestrial fauna, however, is noticeable, with the island having less than one percent of the insect diversity of the peninsula and an absence of numerous animals native to the nearby mainland. Evidence of pre-Columbian human activity on the island is substantial, with some of the most interesting artifacts being stone spheres evidently carved by early civilizations.

  • Very good visibility for scuba diving and snorkeling. The temperature of the water is beautiful. There are restrooms and showers available

  • For snorkeling the waters are not clear and there is not much coral, that if you will see sharks, blankets and turtles, on the way back and forth with luck you will see whales and almost certain dolphins. On the island they allow you To walk rather little. Very cool the entrance and exit through the mangroves from Sierpe.

  • Cano Island (Isla del Cano in Spanish) is an amazing place ; this is paradise: a wonderful beach with an awesome jungles. Moreover, this is an amazing place to dive and there are many species to see (turtles, sharks, mantas, etc.). I loved this destination!
  • The snorkeling around Isla del Caño is INCREDIBLE! The coral is healthy, and there are tons of sea creatures to swim with! When I was there, I swam with sharks, a sting ray, schools of fish, and even a sea turtle! We also saw dolphins on the way! I would recommend tours coming to this island for snorkeling!
