At the heart of the city Parque Juan Santamaria represents the central square, dedicated to Costa Rica's national hero. The surrounding area contains plants and flowers, as well as paintings, and serves as a popular recreational and meeting area among the locals. The concrete section features a bronze statue of Juan Santamaria flanked by two cannons. He was born in 1831 and died in 1856 during William Walker's invasion of the country.
